In most organisations, job roles are pretty well defined – and in fact, job roles define us a lot of time too. How often has someone asked you ‘what do you do?’ as one their first questions?
It isn’t always the case. Many cooperative businesses practise job rotation, or ‘multi-skilling’, notably Suma, the largest independent wholesale food retailer in the UK: “It allows us to use labour and skills more efficiently to cope with the troughs and peaks of business. It enables Suma members to cope with high work loads. It keeps people fresher and enthusiastic for longer and it allows recuperation from stress”.
